Lipedema, sometimes called “painful fat syndrome,” is a chronic condition primarily affecting women. Lipedema is characterized by a symmetrical, bilateral build-up of fibrotic fat beneath the skin, known as subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT).
The term “lipo-lymphedema” literally means fat and swelling and has been used to describe the most advanced stage of lipedema. However, this label is misleading because we now know that lymphedema can be seen at any stage of lipedema, even stage 1. Rather than relying on this term, it is more accurate to have two diagnoses: lipedema and lymphedema.
High-frequency ultrasound is a promising conservative treatment studied by Karen Ashforth in a pilot program. Participants had statistically significant improvements in many areas: not only did pain levels decrease, but thigh circumference also decreased, even with women who had previous liposuction. Additionally, ultrasound readings of the treated areas showed changes in the quality of the subcutaneous adipose tissues after treatment.
